Segurança Social quarterly declaration

Declaring your quarterly income so your contributions are calculated.

Four times a year — by the end of January, April, July and October — you declare what you invoiced in the previous quarter. Segurança Social uses it to set the contribution you'll pay each month for the next three months.

Who needs to do it

Everyone with open activity as a trabalhador independente, except during the first 12 months after you first open activity (you're exempt from contributions then, and Segurança Social tells you when it ends).

Steps

  1. Log in to Segurança Social Direta.
  2. Go to Emprego → Trabalhadores independentes → Declaração trimestral (the menu names move around occasionally — search for "declaração trimestral").
  3. The income from your faturas-recibo is usually pre-filled. Check it, and add anything that wasn't invoiced through the Portal das Finanças.
  4. Submit. You'll see the contribution base and the monthly amount.

Then pay every month

Contributions are paid between the 10th and the 20th of each month. Get the payment reference on Segurança Social Direta, or set up a direct debit (débito direto) so you never miss it.
